Friday, January 16, 2026-A growing impeachment effort targeting Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has ignited sharp debates within the Democratic Party, with some lawmakers blasting the move as “performative bullsh*t” and a distraction from pressing legislative priorities.
The push, led by Representative Robin Kelly of Illinois, has gained real traction, with more than 70 House Democrats signing on to formal articles of impeachment accusing Noem of obstructing Congress, violating the Constitution, and corruption.
Despite the momentum, centrist Democrats have openly criticized the effort, saying it could divert energy away from issues such as affordability and healthcare. “There’s a frustration with all these impeachments. Now, Noem is just soup du jour,” one lawmaker said, echoing broader concerns that the impeachment push may be more symbolic than substantive given the political realities. “It’s all performative bullsh*t,” another Democrat added, arguing that focusing on impeachment could undermine efforts to address voters’ everyday concerns.
Supporters of the effort, however, counter that accountability for Noem’s leadership at the Department of Homeland Security particularly in the wake of controversies involving ICE and high-profile incidents is part of their duty. While the Republican-controlled House is expected to block any move toward removal, the debate highlights growing tensions in Washington over strategy, priorities, and how aggressively lawmakers should confront Trump-era officials.
