TRUMP blasts 5 Republican senators for war powers vote

Sunday, January 11, 2026- President Donald Trump launched a sharp public attack on five Republican senators after they joined Democrats in advancing a Senate war powers resolution designed to limit his authority to conduct further military action without explicit congressional approval.

The procedural vote passed 52–47, marking a rare bipartisan challenge to the president from within his own party. The resolution reflects growing concern in Congress over executive power and the administration’s recent military decisions, intensifying scrutiny of Trump’s foreign policy approach.

Trump responded forcefully on social media, calling out Senators Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Rand Paul of Kentucky, Josh Hawley of Missouri, and Todd Young of Indiana by name. He accused them of undermining national security and claimed they had sided with Democrats to weaken the presidency.

Trump reiterated his long-held view that the War Powers Act is unconstitutional, arguing that it restricts his role as commander in chief and limits the United States’ ability to act swiftly in defense of its interests.

The episode highlights growing fractures within the Republican Party over war powers and congressional oversight. While Trump framed the vote as a betrayal, the senators involved defended their decision as a constitutional responsibility to ensure that military force is authorized by Congress.

With the resolution expected to face a presidential veto, the clash underscores a broader power struggle in Washington over who controls decisions of war and peace and signals rising tension between party loyalty and institutional authority.
