Thousands flee as fierce fighting erupts in Aleppo

Thursday, January 8, 2026- Intense clashes have broken out in the northern Syrian city of Aleppo between Syrian government forces and Kurdish‑led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), forcing tens of thousands of civilians from their homes.

The Syrian army declared the predominantly Kurdish neighborhoods of Sheikh Maqsoud and Achrafieh “closed military zones,” prompting a rapid evacuation as shelling and exchanges of fire intensified. More than 45,000 people were displaced, many heading toward safer areas northwest of the city amid mounting fear and uncertainty.

The latest violence represents the most serious escalation since a deal to integrate Kurdish forces into the national army stalled. Both sides have traded blame over the outbreak of hostilities, and fatalities have been reported among civilians and combatants.

The clashes have disrupted daily life widely—closing Aleppo’s airport, cutting transport routes, and halting industrial activity, while humanitarian corridors were opened to allow civilians to flee.
