Five die in Austrian avalanches, rescuers say

Monday, January 19, 2026- Five people have died after multiple avalanches struck mountainous regions of Austria, according to rescue authorities. The incidents occurred amid unstable snow conditions, catching skiers and mountaineers in high-risk terrain. Emergency teams responded quickly, but the scale and force of the avalanches left little chance for survival in several cases.

Rescuers reported challenging conditions on the ground, including poor visibility and ongoing avalanche danger, complicating search and recovery efforts. Officials have warned that recent weather patterns have significantly increased snowpack instability, making off-piste and high-altitude areas especially dangerous right now.

Authorities are urging the public to heed avalanche warnings, avoid exposed routes, and check local safety advisories before entering mountainous areas. As winter activity continues, the deaths highlight the urgent need for caution, preparedness, and respect for rapidly changing alpine conditions.
