Federal travel ban update: New TRUMP-ordered restrictions now in effect

Friday, January 2, 2026- As of January 1, 2026, a newly expanded federal travel ban ordered by President Donald Trump is officially in effect, significantly tightening entry rules into the United States. The updated restrictions apply to both immigrant and nonimmigrant travelers from multiple countries and are being enforced by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

The administration says the measures are designed to strengthen national security and public safety, while critics argue the policy disproportionately affects African and Muslim-majority nations.

The expansion adds several countries to the existing list of restricted nations, including Burkina Faso, Laos, Mali, Niger, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, and Syria. Depending on the country, the policy ranges from full entry bans to partial restrictions that limit access to tourist, student, and work visas.

Immigration advocates warn the changes could disrupt education plans, employment opportunities, and family reunification for thousands of people with ties to the United States.

The policy has already triggered international repercussions. Some affected nations, including Mali and Burkina Faso, have announced reciprocal travel restrictions on U.S. citizens, escalating diplomatic tensions.

While lawful permanent residents and many existing visa holders are generally exempt, travelers are reporting heightened scrutiny at ports of entry. Legal challenges and further policy adjustments are expected as the expanded travel ban continues to unfold.
