Sunday, January 18, 2026- At least six people have died and dozens more are injured after a massive fire tore through the Gul Plaza shopping mall in Karachi, Pakistan late Saturday night. Firefighters battled the blaze for hours as smoke and flames engulfed the multi‑story building, which houses around 1,200 shops selling clothes, electronics, cosmetics, and other goods. The fire was only partially under control more than a day later, and authorities warned the toll could rise as rescue crews continue their work.
Among those killed was a firefighter who lost his life while trying to extinguish the blaze, officials confirmed. At least 20–30 people have been reported injured, many treated for smoke inhalation and burns, and tens of individuals are still missing, raising fears that more casualties may emerge as search efforts continue. Emergency services have declared a disaster response and mobilized multiple fire brigades and ambulances to the site, while hospitals in the city remain on high alert.
Preliminary reports suggest the fire may have started due to an electrical issue, possibly a short circuit, before spreading rapidly through the tightly packed complex. Parts of the structure have collapsed, complicating rescue operations and prompting authorities to launch an investigation into safety compliance at the facility. Government officials have expressed condolences to victims’ families and promised support for those affected, even as the disaster reignites concerns about fire safety standards in Karachi’s commercial buildings.
