Wednesday, January 14, 2026- A 16‑year‑old boy, identified as Khyon Smith‑Tate of North Philadelphia, was found shot to death inside the bathroom of a Chipotle restaurant near Temple University on Monday evening, police say.
Officers responded around 5:15 p.m. to a report of a person with a gun at the Chipotle on West Montgomery Avenue. Inside the bathroom, they located Smith‑Tate with a gunshot wound to the chest, and he was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after. It was the first day back from winter break for Temple students, and the restaurant was busy at the time.
Philadelphia police said Smith‑Tate went into the bathroom with at least one other juvenile shortly before the shooting, and a spent shell casing from a semi‑automatic weapon was later recovered there. No weapon has been found and no arrests have been made.
Authorities are now searching for multiple teenage suspects, described as males aged about 16 to 17 years old, and are appealing to the public for information to help identify those involved.
The deadly incident has left the community reeling, with officials and Temple University leaders expressing deep sorrow and calling the loss of young life to gun violence a profound tragedy. Police and university officials continue to investigate, and local leaders are urging anyone with information to contact law enforcement as the search for those responsible remains active.
