TRUMPs crackdown on Russian oil hangs heavy as PUTIN arrives in India

Friday, December 5, 2025 -With Vladimir Putin touching down in New Delhi for a state visit, the spotlight is on how deeply Donald Trump’s aggressive sanctions on Russian oil are reshaping global energy and diplomatic alliances. 

The U.S. has slapped punitive tariffs on countries — including a 25 % penalty on Indian imports — that continue buying discounted Russian crude, escalating total duties to 50 %.

As part of the crackdown, the U.S. also sanctioned major Russian oil producers, Rosneft and Lukoil, and pressed international buyers to sever ties. In response, Indian refiners have significantly cut back on fresh Russian-crude orders for upcoming deliveries.

Still — despite mounting pressure from Washington — India remains one of the largest buyers of Russian oil. Putin’s visit — complete with high‑level defense and energy talks — underscores how New Delhi seeks to balance strategic ties with Moscow even as global geopolitics tighten.
