Storm threatens to bring ‘widespread and impactful’ snow and ice to the Northeast

-A major winter storm is moving toward the Northeastern U.S., expected to bring a mix of heavy snow, ice, and dangerous road conditions from the Mid-Atlantic up through New England.

Forecasts suggest 5–10 inches of snow from the Poconos in Pennsylvania to eastern Maine, with some upland and rural areas—especially in northern New England—possibly seeing over a foot. Winter-storm warnings and advisories are already in effect across several states.

The storm follows a stretch of wintry weather across the Midwest and Great Lakes, where record snowfalls caused travel disruptions and widespread flight delays.

As the system tracks east and intensifies off the coast, meteorologists warn that rain in coastal zones could quickly turn to freezing rain and sleet when colder air takes over, increasing the danger of icy roads and power outages, particularly in inland and higher-elevation areas.

Officials and transportation agencies are mobilizing: salt-spreading crews have been dispatched, road-treatment plans activated, and travel advisories issued for Monday night into Wednesday morning.

Residents are being urged to postpone non-essential travel, allow extra time for commutes, and prepare for possible disruptions in public transit, flights, and long-distance driving. The storm could mark the first significant disruption of the winter season in the Northeast, affecting millions.
