Pressure grows on ‘reckless’ HEGSETH as twin scandals engulf Pentagon chief
Sunday, December 7, 2025 -Pete Hegseth is now facing the harshest crisis of his tenure as Defense Secretary. Two simultaneous scandals have erupted: one over a controversial overseas “boat-strike” campaign, and another over his misuse of secure communications protocols.
In the Caribbean campaign, U.S. forces launched strikes on suspected drug-trafficking vessels — operations that have killed at least 87 people since September across 22 military actions. Critics claim that one of those strikes was a “double-tap,” meaning survivors from a first attack were hit again while clinging to wreckage — a move many now describe as a potential war crime.
At the same time, a recent report from the Pentagon’s inspector general concluded Hegseth violated official policy by using an unsecured messaging app to share sensitive military-operation details.
The communications reportedly included strike plans and other classified-level operational data — shared via a personal device and outside approved secure channels. The combination of possible war crimes and apparent security lapses has triggered bipartisan calls for his resignation, as analysts warn this could dangerously undercut morale and trust at the top levels of defense.
Still, Hegseth remains defiant. He insists the boat-strike campaign is part of a broader anti-drug strategy and defends his communications as within his legal authority. But with mounting pressure from lawmakers, watchdogs, and public opinion — and with serious accusations on the table — many now ask: can the Pentagon continue under such leadership without costly consequences?
