Pope Leo XIV convenes his first consistory of cardinals

Monday, December 22, 2025 -Pope Leo XIV has convened his first consistory of cardinals, signaling an early move to consolidate leadership and set priorities for his papacy. The closed-door meeting brought senior church figures to Rome to address governance, appointments, and the immediate challenges facing the global Catholic Church.

By calling the consistory so soon, the new pope is sending a clear message: decision-making and unity are urgent as the Church navigates internal reform and external pressure.

At the center of the discussions were issues of Church administration, pastoral direction, and the balance between tradition and reform. Several cardinals reportedly raised concerns about declining participation in some regions, growing geopolitical instability, and the Church’s role in addressing social and humanitarian crises.

The consistory also served as an opportunity for Pope Leo XIV to listen, assert his leadership style, and begin shaping the inner circle that will help drive policy and doctrine during his tenure.

The meeting is being closely watched across the Catholic world. First consistories often reveal the tone of a papacy, and this one underscored a focus on coordination, accountability, and global engagement.

As expectations rise, Pope Leo XIV’s early outreach to the College of Cardinals suggests a papacy intent on action rather than delay, with decisions made now likely to influence the Church’s direction for years to come.
