New York subway ends its MetroCard era and switches fully to tap-and-go fares

Monday, December 29, 2025 -The New York City subway has officially retired the MetroCard after decades of use, fully transitioning to a tap-and-go fare system. Commuters can now pay using contactless bank cards, mobile wallets, or the new 

OMNY system, designed to streamline entry and reduce wait times at turnstiles. Subway officials report that the switch is already easing congestion during peak hours and speeding up passenger flow.

The move comes as part of a broader push toward modernizing the city’s transit infrastructure. Transit authorities emphasize that the tap-and-go system is safer, more efficient, and better equipped to handle the millions of daily riders who rely on the subway. 

Staff are on hand at stations to assist passengers unfamiliar with the new technology, and additional support resources are available online for a smooth transition.

Officials warn that while MetroCards are no longer accepted, residents should update their payment methods promptly to avoid delays. With the city embracing a fully digital fare system, the shift marks a significant step toward a faster, more convenient, and tech-forward public transit experience.
