National Guard member who survived D.C. attack 'slowly healing,' West Virginia's governor says
Sunday, December 7, 2025 -A member of the West Virginia National Guard is on the road to recovery after surviving a deadly shooting near the White House late last month, the state’s governor said.
The soldier, Andrew Wolfe, 24, sustained a head wound during the ambush that also killed his colleague, Sarah Beckstrom, 20, as they patrolled a subway station in Washington, D.C. on November 26. His parents have reported that his head wound is improving, and that he is beginning to “look more like himself.” Officials expect him to remain in acute care for another two to three weeks.
Wolfe and Beckstrom had been deployed with more than 2,000 other National Guard members as part of a federal mission ordered earlier this year.
The attack, which occurred just three blocks from the White House, shocked officials and renewed scrutiny on the deployment. The suspect, a 29‑year-old Afghan national, has been charged with first‑degree murder and other crimes; he has pleaded not guilty.
In the wake of the tragedy, local communities and state leaders have rallied around Wolfe’s recovery, offering prayers and support. A vigil was held at his alma mater high school, and officials have urged continued solidarity as he recovers.
The shooting — and its aftermath — continue to stir debate over the use of National Guard troops in domestic patrols, even as families and fellow service members focus on healing and remembrance.
