KYLE WHITTINGHAM named Michigan’s head football coach

Sunday, December 28, 2025 -Kyle Whittingham has been officially named the J. Ira and Nicki Harris Family Head Football Coach at the University of Michigan, marking a major change for one of college football’s top programs.

The long-time Utah coach agreed to a five-year contract to lead the Wolverines beginning with the 2026 season, taking over from Sherrone Moore amid recent leadership changes. Whittingham brings decades of experience, a reputation for discipline, and a strong track record of success as the 22nd head coach in Michigan’s football history.

Whittingham, 66, steps into the role after a 21-year tenure at the University of Utah, where he compiled a 177‑88 record and guided the Utes to multiple conference championships and bowl victories. His hiring comes at a crucial moment for Michigan, which has been seeking stability after the previous coach’s departure.

Athletic leadership highlighted Whittingham’s character, coaching expertise, and commitment to building strong teams both on and off the field as aligning closely with Michigan’s values and long-term ambitions.

The appointment has generated significant attention and optimism across college football, with analysts pointing to Whittingham’s leadership and defensive expertise as key assets for revitalizing the Wolverines’ program.

As Michigan prepares for its upcoming bowl game and looks toward future Big Ten and national title pursuits, Whittingham’s hiring signals a renewed emphasis on consistency, culture, and competitive excellence.
