Interoceanic Train derails in southern Mexico, killing at least 13 and injuring dozens
Tuesday, December 30, 2025 -A tragic train derailment in southern Mexico has claimed the lives of at least 13 people and left dozens more injured in what authorities are calling one of the deadliest rail accidents in recent years.
The Interoceanic Train, operating between the Pacific port of Salina Cruz in Oaxaca and Coatzacoalcos on the Gulf of Mexico, derailed on Sunday near the town of Nizanda while navigating a curve, sending several cars off the tracks and down an embankment.
Early emergency response reports indicate that 98 people were wounded, including several critically, as rescue teams worked through difficult terrain to reach survivors.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed the casualties and immediately deployed top federal officials and support teams to the site to assist in ongoing search and rescue efforts. Governor Salomón Jara echoed condolences and noted collaboration between state and federal agencies to treat the injured and support affected families.
Of those hurt, 36 remain hospitalized, and at least five are reported in serious condition, while many others have been treated and released. The train was carrying approximately 250 passengers and crew members at the time of the accident.
The derailment has prompted a formal investigation by Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office and other safety authorities to determine the exact cause of the accident, with officials urging patience as they examine all possibilities.
The Interoceanic Train is a major infrastructure project designed to strengthen trade and transportation across the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, and its temporary suspension has sparked concern among local communities and transportation officials. As recovery operations continue, authorities have pledged full support for victims’ families and transparency throughout the investigation process.
