French split over BRIGITTE BARDOT tribute due to her far right views

Tuesday, December 30, 2025 -France is deeply divided over how to honor film icon Brigitte Bardot following her death at age 91, with controversy centered on her well‑documented far‑right political views and inflammatory remarks.

While political leaders from across the spectrum have offered tributes to the star, the reaction has been sharply split: some praise her cinematic legacy and influence, while others stress that her later‑life rhetoric and actions cannot be overlooked.

Right‑wing politicians and supporters have been among the first to laud Bardot as a quintessentially French figure, celebrating her impact on culture and national identity.

At the same time, many on the left and center have tempered their praise, acknowledging her contributions to French cinema and animal welfare while pointing to her controversial support for far‑right causes and statements criticizing immigrants and other groups.

Critics argue that full tributes risk whitewashing or overlooking the extremist elements of her legacy, prompting intense debate in political and cultural circles.

The controversy isn’t limited to France. Internationally, public figures who initially paid homage have faced backlash upon learning of Bardot’s political record. For example, pop star Chappell Roan deleted a social media tribute after fans highlighted Bardot’s history of racist and discriminatory remarks, calling the discovery “very disappointing” and clarifying that she does not support those views.

This global reaction underscores how Bardot’s legacy — once defined by glamour and artistry — is now inseparably tied to the debate over how to remember cultural icons with deeply troubling political affiliations.
