EU leader warns of US interference in Europe's affairs as Russia praises TRUMP's security vision

Tuesday, December 9, 2025 -António Costa, the president of the European Council, issued a strong warning Monday that the United States should not interfere in European domestic politics — emphasizing that only European citizens have the right to decide which parties govern them. 

His remarks came in response to a newly released U.S. national security strategy under Donald J. Trump that many in Europe view as portraying EU allies as weak, while implicitly supporting far‑right political movements across the continent.

The document — which shifts U.S. policy markedly from previous administrations — also criticizes European stances on free speech and migration, raising concern among EU leaders that it could embolden nationalist forces and weaken the bloc from within. 

Analysts warn that the strategy’s tone and implications represent not just diplomatic friction but a fundamental challenge to European sovereignty and democratic values.

Meanwhile, Moscow — represented by Kremlin spokespeople — praised the U.S. security strategy, saying it aligns with Russian interests. That endorsement has heightened fears in Brussels that the plan could weaken Europe’s unity on security, particularly regarding the ongoing war in Ukraine and long–term relations with Russia.
