Death of Afghan Commander, financial stress surface in National Guard shooting investigation
Wednesday, December 3, 2025 -Tensions around the deadly United States National Guard shooting are intensifying, as investigators say emerging personal factors may have influenced the suspect’s actions.
According to sources, 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal — accused of ambushing two guardsmen in Washington, D.C. — had been under mounting financial pressure. He was reportedly unemployed, lacked a valid work permit, and was struggling to provide for his wife and five children.
Compounding the strain at home, authorities say Lakanwal was reportedly deeply affected by the recent death of an Afghan commander he respected and worked with during his time in Afghanistan. Investigators believe this emotional blow, layered on existing financial hardship and potential mental-health turmoil, could have helped push him toward violence.
Still, while the probe remains in its early stages, officials say they are also examining whether the shooting was inspired or directed by external actors. Despite these lines of inquiry, no concrete public evidence has yet emerged tying Lakanwal to any recognized terrorist group — and no terror charges have been filed.
