COLIN ALLRED drops Senate bid, pivots to run for Congress

Tuesday, December 9, 2025 -
Colin Allred announced on December 8, 2025 that he is withdrawing from the 2026 Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate in Texas and will instead run for a seat in the newly drawn 33rd Congressional District in Dallas.

With the filing deadline for primaries approaching, Allred said his decision was driven by concerns that a contentious Senate primary — likely involving fellow Democrats James Talarico and Jasmine Crockett — could splinter party unity and weaken Democrats’ chances against leading Republican contenders.

By shifting to the House race, Allred aims to re-establish himself in a district that covers part of his former congressional base — areas he represented from 2018 until 2024.

His move immediately reshapes the Democratic field, leaving Crockett and Talarico as the main contenders for the Senate nomination and forcing a rapid recalibration of campaign strategies within the party.

The decision underscores broader strategic calculations for Texas Democrats. The newly upheld congressional map has created only a handful of competitive districts in the Dallas–Fort Worth region, making House seats a more realistic path to regaining influence than statewide races in a GOP-leaning state. If Allred regains a congressional seat, he could help stabilize Democratic positioning amid a volatile and high-stakes election cycle.
