Capitol agenda: Health deal hinges on TRUMP

Wednesday, December 3, 2025
-As Congress races against time to avoid massive health insurance premium hikes, the fate of a major health-care deal is increasingly tied to Donald J. Trump’s next move.

With key subsidies under the Affordable Care Act set to expire, lawmakers warn that tens of millions of Americans could see dramatically higher costs for coverage — unless Trump signals support for extending or replacing those subsidies.

Behind the scenes, negotiations are fraught. Some Republicans are calling for new restrictions and reforms as conditions for backing a deal — especially on Medicaid and drug-pricing provisions. Others urge caution, warning that deep changes could destabilize coverage for low-income and rural communities.

Meanwhile, the administration has floated major shifts: price-cuts for drugs through negotiations with major manufacturers and revising how subsidies are delivered — proposals that stand in contrast with some traditional GOP stances.

At this critical juncture, the question is: will Trump choose to be the “closer,” or will his hesitations push Congress into a political and humanitarian crisis — one that could elevate health-care costs for millions and deepen partisan divides. The clock is ticking, and all eyes in Washington are waiting on his next word.
