Australian prime minister announces bravery award for heroes of Bondi antisemitic attack

Saturday, December 27, 2025 -Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced plans for a national bravery award to honor the civilians and first responders who confronted extreme violence during the recent antisemitic attack at Bondi Beach that claimed multiple lives and left many others injured.

Albanese said those who ran toward danger to protect and assist others demonstrated extraordinary courage, adding that their actions represent the very best of the nation during a moment of deep tragedy.

The planned recognition will be delivered through a special process within Australia’s existing honors system, designed to acknowledge acts of exceptional bravery and selflessness. Among those highlighted were individuals who intervened directly to stop the attacker and assist victims, despite serious personal risk.

The Prime Minister emphasized that these acts of courage stood in stark contrast to the hatred that fueled the attack and should be remembered and formally honored.

The announcement comes as Australia continues to process the aftermath of the attack and confront broader concerns about hate-motivated violence.

By recognizing bravery and compassion in such a public way, the government aims to reinforce national unity and send a clear message that courage, solidarity, and humanity will define the country’s response to acts of extremism.
