1.5 million bags of shredded cheese recalled — check your fridge now

Thursday, December 4, 2025 -
A massive recall has been issued on more than 1.5 million bags of shredded cheese nationwide after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) flagged possible metal fragments found in products manufactured by Great Lakes Cheese Co. The recall affects multiple shredded‑cheese varieties — including shredded mozzarella, Italian‑style blends, pizza blends, and mozzarella blends with provolone or parmesan.

Shredded cheeses from dozens of private‑label brands sold at major retailers such as Walmart, Target, Aldi, Publix, and Sprouts are among those recalled. Some of the affected brand names include: Always Save; Borden; Brookshire’s; Cache Valley Creamery; Coburn Farms; Food Club; Food Lion; Gold Rush Creamery; Good & Gather; Happy Farms by Aldi; Hill Country Fare; H-E-B; Know & Love; Laura Lynn; Lucerne Dairy Farms; Publix; Simply Go; Sprouts Farmers Market; and more.

The recall has been elevated to a Class II — meaning consumption could cause temporary or medically reversible health effects. While no illnesses have been reported so far, the risk of dental damage, mouth or throat lacerations, or internal injury remains if metal fragments are ingested.

If you have any shredded cheese at home, take a moment to check the brand name, packaging type, and sell‑by/UPC details before using it. If your cheese matches the recall list, discard it or return it to the store — better safe than sorry.
