This surge marks the highest level in over a decade and has raised significant public health concerns across multiple counties.
Experts attribute the sharp rise to a combination of factors, including declining childhood vaccination rates, waning immunity from earlier immunizations, and improved detection and reporting.
Approximately 85 percent of this year’s cases in Texas have occurred among children, heightening worries about severe outcomes, particularly in infants and young children who are most at risk for complications.
Texas health officials are urging immediate preventive measures, stressing that vaccination remains the most effective defense.
Parents are being encouraged to ensure their children are up to date on pertussis shots, while booster doses are being recommended for pregnant women and individuals who will be in close contact with newborns. Authorities warn that swift action is essential to prevent further spread of the highly contagious disease.
