Thousands trapped in Sudan’s El-Fasher as conflict blocks escape routes

Monday, October 3, 2025-Panic and despair are mounting in Sudan’s embattled city of El-Fasher, where thousands of civilians remain trapped amid fierce fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Aid agencies say escape routes have been cut off, food supplies are dwindling, and hospitals are overwhelmed by casualties.

The United Nations has warned that the situation is deteriorating rapidly, with reports of heavy shelling in residential areas and entire neighborhoods reduced to rubble. For many residents, the city has become a deadly cage impossible to flee and too dangerous to stay.

The global response has been one of alarm and frustration. Humanitarian workers on the ground describe scenes of desperation, as families huddle in makeshift shelters with little access to water or medicine. International observers and rights groups have condemned both warring sides for ignoring ceasefire calls and obstructing humanitarian corridors.

“El-Fasher is on the brink of a humanitarian collapse,” said one UN official, adding that the world’s silence is “costing innocent lives by the hour.” Social media posts from Sudanese civilians plead for attention, using hashtags to amplify their voices as communication networks falter.

Without urgent intervention, analysts warn the crisis could escalate into one of the deadliest chapters of Sudan’s civil conflict. Diplomats fear that continued fighting in El-Fasher could destabilize the broader Darfur region, reigniting ethnic tensions and mass displacement.

The UN is pressing for an immediate truce to allow civilians safe passage and aid delivery, but negotiations remain stalled. As night falls over the war-torn city, the world watches in uneasy silence while thousands cling to the faint hope that help will come before it’s too late.
