No West Virginia National Guard troops deployed in D.C. have asked to leave since deadly shooting, governor says
Sunday, November 30, 2025 -Despite the heightened tension and ongoing investigation, all deployed personnel have chosen to remain on duty, signaling strong internal cohesion and commitment to their mission.
Governor Patrick Morrisey said the troops expressed a clear desire to stay in place and continue their assignment in the capital.
Approximately 180 West Virginia Guard members are currently deployed in Washington, part of a broader multistate effort to support federal operations. Officials described morale as steady, even as counseling resources and command support have been increased after the attack.
The governor stressed that the priority now is supporting the affected families and ensuring the safety and stability of forces still on the ground.
While federal authorities have suggested additional reinforcements, Morrisey stated that no decision has been made regarding sending more West Virginia personnel. For now, the Guard remains fully deployed, unified, and focused on completing its mission amid heightened security concerns.
