Indonesia authorities detain man wanted in China over $138m loan default

Wednesday, November 19, 2025 - Indonesian officials say they have detained a Chinese property executive wanted in China over an unpaid corporate loan worth about $138 million.

The 58-year-old man, identified only as WZ, was picked up last Thursday on Batam Island after Indonesia received a request from the Chinese embassy, according to Immigration Intelligence Director Agus Waluyo.

Authorities say WZ previously headed a Chinese real estate company that failed to repay nearly 1 billion yuan, prompting a financial-crime investigation in China. He reportedly left the country before a warrant was issued and had been moving through several Asian nations since August before entering Indonesia on October 7.

Agus said WZ is now in immigration custody while officials coordinate with Beijing. China’s property market has experienced a prolonged downturn since 2020, when new borrowing rules triggered a wave of defaults and destabilised major developers, including Evergrande. The wider fallout has pressured authorities in the region to track down financial fugitives.

Indonesia has deported several foreign nationals wanted abroad in recent months, many of them linked to regional online-scam networks.
