Thursday, November 20, 2025-The 2025–26 flu season in the United States is shaping up to be unusually serious, according to experts watching early warning signs. Influenza activity is rising faster than normal in several regions, and there’s growing concern about a new strain — the H3N2 subclade K — that wasn’t well matched to this year’s vaccine.
Last season’s flu (2024–25) was already classified as high severity, with elevated rates of hospitalizations, outpatient visits, and flu-related deaths. The percentage of doctor visits for flu-like illness hit 7.8%, marking one of the strongest flu seasons in more than a decade.
Public health officials are urging people to get vaccinated, especially high-risk groups like the elderly, young children, and pregnant women. Beyond shots, they’re also reminding everyone to practice basic prevention measures: wash hands regularly, stay home when sick, and seek treatment early — because if this season lives up to current warnings, the stakes could be very high.
