Dozens hospitalized after ammonia leak in Oklahoma

Friday, November 14, 2025 -A tanker truck carrying about 25,000 pounds of anhydrous ammonia leaked outside a Holiday Inn Express in Weatherford, Oklahoma, sparking a major chemical emergency.

The leak began just before 10 p.m. Wednesday, filling nearby building hallways with the toxic gas and sending at least 36 people to hospital, according to local officials.

Emergency crews ordered 500–600 people to evacuate, while others were told to shelter in place as firefighters wearing gas masks went door to door to warn residents. Several nursing homes were evacuated and schools were closed.

Officials say the leak was likely caused by a mechanical failure — possibly a faulty valve or seal — on the truck. Hazmat teams, environmental agencies, and the Oklahoma National Guard are on the scene. Air quality is being monitored; authorities say the leak has stopped and they are working on cleanup, but the situation remains serious.
