Friday, November 14, 2025 -In a dramatic move to avert a government shutdown, Congress has banned most hemp-derived THC products, sending shockwaves through the rapidly growing cannabis industry.
The measure targets delta-8 THC and similar cannabinoids, which have surged in popularity as legal alternatives to marijuana. Retailers and consumers now face a drastically reduced market, as these compounds are reclassified under federal law.
Industry groups have decried the ban as abrupt and damaging, warning that thousands of small businesses could be forced to close. The National Cannabis Trade Association called the decision “a sudden and unfair blow to an already fragile sector,” highlighting that hemp-based THC products had been widely legal under prior federal guidance.
Lawmakers say the move is necessary for public safety and regulatory clarity, citing concerns over untested products and inconsistent labeling. Advocates for legalization argue that federal oversight, not prohibition, would be a better solution. As the law goes into effect, consumers and businesses will need to adjust quickly or risk running afoul of federal enforcement.
