Monday, November 17, 2025 -China has issued a sharp warning to its citizens in Japan, particularly students, urging them to remain vigilant in light of deteriorating security conditions.
The Ministry of Education’s recent “Study Abroad Alert No. 4” highlights a surge in violent crime targeting Chinese nationals, alongside what Beijing describes as an “unfavorable study environment.”
The alert comes at a time of escalating diplomatic strain, sparked by remarks from Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. Her comments about potential military intervention if China attacked Taiwan have drawn strong condemnation from Beijing, which claims they are dangerously provocative.
China’s Foreign Ministry adds that such rhetoric has poisoned “people-to-people exchanges,” amplifying risks for Chinese nationals in Japan.
In response to the warnings, several major Chinese airlines — including Air China and China Eastern — are allowing passengers to cancel or change Japan-bound flights for free.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism has explicitly advised against traveling to Japan, calling the security environment “deteriorating.” With these measures, Beijing is signaling that its concerns are more than diplomatic — it is prioritizing the safety of its citizens above all.
