Canada loses measles elimination status after three decades

Tuesday, November 11, 2025 -Canada has officially lost its measles elimination status, a designation it held for over 30 years, after recent outbreaks revealed the virus is spreading again.

Public health officials report that insufficient vaccination coverage in certain communities, combined with increased international travel, has allowed measles to resurface. The World Health Organization’s decision highlights a growing vulnerability in what was once a success story in infectious disease control.

Health experts emphasize that measles is highly contagious and can lead to serious complications, particularly in young children and immunocompromised individuals.

Vaccination remains the most effective defense, and authorities are urging Canadians to ensure they and their families are fully immunized. Gaps in coverage have become especially evident in regions where vaccine hesitancy and misinformation persist.

The loss of elimination status serves as a warning that public health achievements can be reversed if vigilance lapses. Officials are calling for urgent action to boost vaccination campaigns and community outreach, stressing that measles is preventable—but only if immunization rates are high enough to halt transmission.
