Thursday, November 13, 2025 -In southern Peru, a passenger bus plunged over 200 meters (around 650 feet) into a ravine early Wednesday after colliding head‑on with a pickup truck on a curved section of the road, near the banks of the Ocoña River in the Arequipa Region. The bus had been traveling from Chala to Arequipa City.
At least 37 people were killed in the crash, and 13 to 24 more were injured, including minors. The driver of the truck survived and has been detained for investigation.
Rescue efforts were hampered by the steep, rugged terrain of the ravine, and authorities have launched an investigation into the crash. With roads in this mountainous region already known for dangerous conditions, the incident raises urgent concerns about road safety, driver behaviour, and infrastructure on rural stretches of the highway.
