Wednesday, October 22, 2025- A man previously convicted for his role in the January 6 Capitol riot and later pardoned by President Donald Trump has been arrested in New York for allegedly threatening to kill House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries.
Authorities identified the suspect as 34-year-old Christopher Moynihan of Clinton, New York. Investigators say Moynihan sent text messages ahead of Jeffries’ scheduled speech in New York City, writing that he “could not allow” Jeffries “to live” and that he “must be eliminated.” Moynihan has been charged under state law with making a terroristic threat and is being held pending a court appearance.
Moynihan was sentenced to 21 months in prison in 2023 for obstructing an official proceeding during the Capitol attack but was pardoned earlier this year as part of Trump’s broad clemency order for January 6 defendants. Jeffries thanked law enforcement for their swift action, saying that threats and violence “will never silence democracy.”
