Thursday, October 2, 2025 - A man convicted of strangling his wife to death died by suicide inside his New Jersey jail cell just one day after a jury delivered the murder verdict, prosecutors announced.

Shawn Lichtfuss, 53, was found unresponsive by guards making rounds at the Camden County Correctional Facility at 11:18 p.m. on September 19, the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed Wednesday, September 1 Despite medical staff administering emergency aid, the inmate was pronounced dead at 11:39 p.m.

An autopsy conducted by the Gloucester-Camden-Salem County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed the Voorhees Township man died of asphyxia, and his death was officially ruled a suicide. Lichtfuss’s death is now under review by the Attorney General’s Office.

The suicide came immediately after a six-day trial concluded with Lichtfuss being found guilty of first-degree murder for the death of his 38-year-old wife, Stefanie Caraway, on August 3, 2021. The jury reportedly reached the guilty verdict in just 45 minutes.

Caraway was discovered dead in the couple’s bedroom during a welfare check. Her husband was arrested hours later, found sitting in his car near police headquarters, NJ.com reported.
