House GOP unveils new funding bill to avert government shutdown

Wednesday, October 8, 2025-Republican leaders in the U.S. House of Representatives have introduced a new funding proposal aimed at preventing a looming government shutdown as the October 11 deadline approaches.

The $1.3 trillion short-term bill seeks to extend federal funding for six weeks while negotiations continue over long-term spending priorities. Speaker Mike Johnson called the measure a “responsible bridge” to keep essential services running, while Democrats quickly criticized it as a political maneuver that fails to address key domestic programs.

The announcement triggered immediate partisan reactions across Washington. Conservatives within the GOP praised the bill’s inclusion of border security and defense funding provisions, while moderates and Democrats blasted the exclusion of public health and education allocations.

Progressive lawmakers warned that the proposal risks “holding federal workers hostage” for political leverage. Outside Congress, unions and nonprofits braced for uncertainty, fearing another round of delayed paychecks and suspended programs.

Economists warn that even a short-term shutdown could disrupt financial markets and slow economic growth heading into the holiday season. If both chambers fail to agree by the deadline, federal agencies may once again face furloughs and service suspensions.

With negotiations intensifying, all eyes are on whether House Republicans can rally enough support from both sides of the aisle or whether the U.S. is heading toward its second shutdown battle in less than two years.
