Government shutdown deepens as TRUMP administration faces growing backlash

Thursday, October 23, 2025-The U.S. government shutdown has stretched into its 22nd day, now the second-longest in American history, with no resolution in sight. A Senate vote to advance a temporary funding bill failed again, as the Trump administration and congressional Democrats remain deadlocked over spending priorities.

President Trump has refused to meet with Democratic leaders until the government reopens, a stance that has further strained relations in Washington and left hundreds of thousands of federal workers in limbo.

As the shutdown drags on, reports indicate that the administration is selectively paying certain federal workers including military personnel and agents at ICE, Border Patrol, and the Secret Service while leaving thousands of others without pay.

Critics have called this approach unfair and politically motivated, warning that it creates a “two-tier” system within the federal workforce. Unpaid employees across multiple agencies have begun staging protests and filing complaints, describing growing anxiety over missed rent, mortgages, and medical bills.

Analysts say the Trump administration is using the shutdown not just as a negotiating tactic but as an opportunity to push structural changes in government operations, including proposed layoffs and departmental reorganizations.

Legal challenges are already emerging to block some of these efforts. With public frustration mounting and essential services disrupted, the political and economic costs of the shutdown are rising daily leaving the administration under pressure to find a way out before lasting damage is done.
