Wednesday, October 22, 2025- Alexander De Croo, Belgium’s former Prime Minister, has been appointed to lead the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the UN agency focused on reducing poverty, inequality, and promoting sustainable development worldwide.
De Croo succeeds Germany’s Achim Steiner and will also serve as a UN Under-Secretary-General, collaborating closely with Secretary-General António Guterres. His term is set for four years, pending approval by the UN General Assembly.
De Croo, a member of the Open VLD party, served as Belgium’s Prime Minister from 2020 to 2025. His appointment is seen as recognition of his leadership and commitment to global development, with the UNDP operating in 170 countries and territories to address pressing global challenges.
