Walmart announces plans to establish the first stores in Africa by the end of the year

Tuesday, September 9, 2025 -U.S. retailer Walmart announced the launch of its first branded stores in South Africa, marking a significant strategic move for the retailer.

Walmart, already a shareholder in South African retail group Massmart, enters the competitive landscape alongside established domestic retailers such as Shoprite, Woolworths, and Pick n Pay. In the online realm, it faces challenges from Amazon and market leader Takealot.com.

A Walmart statement emphasized the company’s commitment to making high-quality, affordable merchandise accessible to a broader customer base. To achieve this, Walmart has collaborated with small and medium-sized African-based suppliers.

The South African Walmart stores will cater to a diverse range of customer needs, offering merchandise, fresh groceries, household essentials, apparel, and technology products. President and CEO Kath McLay highlighted Walmart’s commitment to providing locally sourced products.

By partnering with South African suppliers and entrepreneurs, the company aims to introduce its signature low prices and global standards to the market while celebrating South Africa’s rich cultural heritage.

Several store sites are currently under development, with official opening dates anticipated to be announced in October. Notably, Walmart’s Massmart brand encompasses the Makro and Game retail chains, which offer similar merchandise to Walmart, as well as the Builders Warehouse building materials chain.
