At least 70 killed in suspected ADF rebels' attack on funeral in eastern DR Congo

Tuesday, September 9, 2025 -At least 70 individuals were tragically lost in an overnight assault on a funeral procession in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. Local media, citing eyewitness accounts, reported the incident on Tuesday.

This attack, part of a string of such incidents in recent months, occurred approximately 10:00 pm local time (0000GMT Tuesday) in Ntoyo, a village situated within Lubero territory of the eastern province of North Kivu.

“The perpetrators brutally eliminated almost everyone gathered at the funeral home,” Nzalamingi recounted. “Furthermore, numerous individuals were shot dead. The bodies are currently lying on the road and in plots near the center of Ntoyo. While I have been unable to conduct a precise count, I estimate that the number of fatalities exceeds 70, with the majority of victims succumbing to gunshot wounds.”

Mwami Eugene Viringa, a local leader, further intensified the alarm by suggesting that the death toll could potentially surpass 70. A returning resident who actively participated in the search for bodies in Ntoyo corroborated this claim, indicating that the total number of fatalities reached 102.

The Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), originally established in Uganda, has been actively engaged in eastern Congo in recent years. Their expansionist ambitions have led them to cross international borders, establishing a foothold in the Kivu region. This strategic move has been fueled by political instability and local conflicts.
