N.J. governor debate heats up over KIRK assassination

Tuesday, September 23, 2025 -New Jersey’s first gubernatorial debate turned tense as candidates Mikie Sherrill and Jack Ciattarelli sparred over the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

Both condemned the killing, but Ciattarelli accused Sherrill of exploiting the tragedy for political gain. Sherrill defended her stance, arguing that Kirk’s rhetoric fueled extremism even as she denounced the violence.

The exchange highlighted deep partisan divides, with the candidates also clashing on Donald Trump’s influence, the economy, and political polarization. The debate, held at Rider University, underscored how Kirk’s death has intensified the campaign’s stakes.
