MACRON appoints defense Minister LECORNU as France’s latest Prime Minister

Thursday, September 11, 2025 -French President Emmanuel Macron has appointed Defense Minister Sébastien Lecornu as the country’s new prime minister, following days of political turbulence and the collapse of the government after a failed confidence vote.

Lecornu, 38, becomes one of the youngest to hold the position in modern French history, marking Macron’s effort to stabilize his administration and project continuity after recent setbacks in Parliament. Known for his loyalty to Macron and his pragmatic approach to governance, Lecornu has risen rapidly through the ranks and was seen as a safe, strategic choice for the embattled president.

The appointment has triggered mixed reactions across the French political spectrum. Supporters argue that Lecornu’s experience managing France’s defense portfolio during a time of heightened global instability gives him both credibility and a steady hand.

Critics, however, see his selection as a sign of Macron clinging to close allies rather than broadening his coalition. Opposition leaders have already questioned whether Lecornu will have the political capital to unite a fractured Parliament or to address mounting frustrations over the economy, cost-of-living pressures, and growing social unrest.

Observers suggest that Macron is betting on Lecornu’s discipline and technocratic style to help restore order and protect his reform agenda, particularly with the 2027 presidential election looming. Still, the challenges ahead are immense: Macron’s centrist alliance has lost ground, and the political climate is charged with populist energy from both the left and right.

Whether Lecornu can navigate these tensions and secure the durability of Macron’s government remains to be seen, but his premiership begins at one of the most precarious moments of the president’s tenure.
