Indonesian politicians face perk cuts amid rising public anger

Monday, September 1, 2025 -Indonesia’s government has announced plans to slash perks and benefits enjoyed by lawmakers in a bid to calm mounting public anger over political privilege during tough economic times.

The move comes after weeks of protests and criticism over rising living costs, with many citizens accusing politicians of living lavishly while ordinary families struggle. The decision to trim allowances, travel budgets, and other financial benefits for members of parliament and local officials has sparked widespread debate.

Reform advocates argue the cuts are long overdue, pointing out that Indonesian lawmakers are among the highest paid in the region relative to average income. Meanwhile, some politicians have quietly expressed frustration, warning that the changes could “undermine effectiveness” in governance.

Whether the measure will be enough to ease unrest remains uncertain. While many Indonesians welcomed the cuts as a symbolic step toward fairness, activists say structural reforms including stronger anti-corruption measures are needed to rebuild public trust. The government hopes this gesture will buy time and goodwill, but the pressure for deeper political accountability is only expected to grow.
