For Nepal protesters, wealthy ‘Nepo kids’ are a source of outrage

Wednesday, September 10, 2025 -A wave of public anger is sweeping Nepal as protesters increasingly target the children of political and business elites dubbed “Nepo kids” for flaunting their wealth and privilege.

Demonstrations have erupted in Kathmandu and other cities, where young people accuse the offspring of powerful families of benefiting from nepotism while ordinary citizens struggle with unemployment, inflation, and limited opportunities.

The frustration reflects a deeper resentment toward entrenched inequality and corruption, which many say are stifling Nepal’s democratic aspirations.

On social media, images of luxury cars, lavish parties, and expensive foreign educations linked to elite families have fueled outrage. Activists argue that these displays highlight the growing gulf between rich and poor, especially as Nepal’s economy falters and migration for work abroad continues to climb.

Protesters have demanded accountability from leaders they accuse of using public office to enrich their families rather than address systemic problems like healthcare access and youth job creation.

Analysts warn that the unrest could mark a turning point in Nepalese politics. While previous protests often centered on specific policies or governments, this movement appears more generational, driven by younger Nepalis who see the system as fundamentally rigged against them.

If the anger continues to grow, it could pressure political leaders into reforms or risk fueling instability. Either way, the protests against “Nepo kids” reflect a widening impatience with privilege and corruption in a country still struggling to deliver on its democratic promises.
