Friday, September 19, 2025 -Over a dozen New York state and city officials were arrested on September 18, 2025, during a protest at 26 Federal Plaza in Manhattan, home to a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility.
The demonstration aimed to inspect holding cells on the 10th floor, citing concerns about overcrowding, unsanitary conditions, and lack of basic necessities for detainees.
Among those arrested were NYC Comptroller Brad Lander, Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, State Senator Julia Salazar, and Assemblywoman Jessica González-Rojas.
They were denied access to the facility and subsequently detained during a sit-in protest. An additional 66 individuals were held outside the building for blocking access.
The protest was organized by a coalition of elected officials, immigrant rights activists, and faith leaders. Participants condemned ICE’s practices and called for increased oversight and accountability. The event highlights ongoing tensions between local leaders advocating for immigrant rights and federal authorities enforcing immigration policies.
