Canary Wharf anti-asylum protest turns violent, child reportedly exposed to pepper spray

Tuesday, September 2, 2025 -A protest against asylum policies in London’s Canary Wharf spiraled into violence on Saturday, leaving both police and demonstrators injured. Tensions erupted after scuffles broke out between officers and protesters, with police confirming that an officer was punched in the face during the clashes.

Authorities also reported that a child “may have been affected” by pepper spray used to disperse the crowd, prompting concerns over safety as families were caught in the chaos. The incident unfolded as hundreds gathered in the financial district to demonstrate against what organizers described as “unsustainable asylum numbers.”

Witnesses said the protest started peacefully but quickly turned hostile, with chants escalating into confrontations with police. Video footage shared online showed officers attempting to control the crowd as tempers flared, while medics treated several people on the scene.

The Metropolitan Police said it is investigating the altercations and confirmed several arrests were made. Human rights groups condemned the violence, calling for restraint on all sides and urging authorities to ensure the protection of children at public demonstrations.

The clashes highlight growing tensions in Britain over asylum and migration policies, an issue that continues to fuel heated political debate ahead of the next general election.
