Autopsy results awaited for black student found on Mississippi campus

Thursday, September 18, 2025 -Authorities are awaiting autopsy results for Demartravion “Trey” Reed, a 21-year-old Black student found hanging from a tree at Delta State University in Cleveland, Mississippi.

His body was discovered near the campus pickleball courts on September 15. Officials say no immediate signs of foul play were observed.

Preliminary reports from the coroner noted no broken bones, lacerations, or injuries suggesting assault. Surveillance footage exists but has not been made public. Reed’s family, represented by civil rights lawyer Ben Crump, is demanding transparency and an independent autopsy.

The case has drawn national attention, with calls for an FBI investigation from local lawmakers. Students and community members have expressed fear and frustration, citing Mississippi’s history of racial violence. Delta State has canceled classes and increased counseling services as the investigation continues.
