Anger in Australia after Optus outage linked to deaths

Tuesday, September 23, 2025 -A nationwide outage at telecom provider Optus has triggered outrage after emergency calls to triple-0 failed during the blackout, leaving several Australians unable to reach help.

Authorities confirmed at least three deaths, including an infant and two elderly people, were directly linked to the disruption, which lasted more than 13 hours.

Public reaction has been fierce, with grieving families and state leaders condemning the company’s slow response and lack of communication.

Officials described the failure as “unacceptable” and “reprehensible,” warning that millions of Australians were placed at risk when hundreds of calls went unanswered. The backlash has sparked debates about corporate accountability and the fragility of national emergency infrastructure.

The federal government and regulators have launched formal investigations, demanding Optus explain why backup systems failed and whether negligence played a role. With pressure mounting for stricter oversight and leadership changes, the incident could become a turning point in how Australia safeguards its critical communications networks.
