Afghanistan earthquake kills more than 600 as rescue efforts intensify

Tuesday, September 2, 2025 -A devastating earthquake has struck eastern Afghanistan, leaving more than 600 people dead and over 1,500 injured, according to the Taliban-controlled Interior Ministry.

The 6.0-magnitude quake, which hit late Sunday near Jalalabad, caused widespread destruction across Kunar and Nangarhar provinces, flattening homes and triggering landslides that blocked vital roads.

Entire villages built with mud-brick structures crumbled within seconds, trapping families under rubble and cutting off already isolated communities. The scale of the disaster has shocked residents, with survivors describing scenes of chaos as buildings collapsed and dust filled the air.

In Kunar province alone, more than 600 people were reported killed, while hundreds more remain unaccounted for. Hospitals in Jalalabad and Kabul are overwhelmed, and medical staff warn of shortages in critical supplies.

Rescue teams have deployed helicopters and heavy equipment, but progress remains slow due to blocked roads and the remote, mountainous terrain. International observers say the tragedy underscores Afghanistan’s deep vulnerability, with fragile infrastructure and limited resources worsening the crisis.

The earthquake comes at a time when the country is already grappling with economic hardship and reduced foreign aid. With winter approaching, aid agencies warn that thousands of displaced survivors urgently need shelter, food, and medical assistance. The true scale of the devastation may only become clear in the coming days, as authorities race against time to find survivors and deliver relief to those most affected.
