U.S teen becomes a millionaire after selling a card game he invented when he was just 7 years old

Friday, August 8, 2025 - A Seattle, USA teenager is now a millionaire after selling a card game he invented when he was just seven years old.

Alex Butler, now 15, recently sold his hit game Taco vs. Burrito to Wisconsin-based toy company PlayMonster, known for titles like Farkle and 5 Second Rule. While the exact sale price hasn’t been disclosed, Alex confirmed he’s already planning investments — and is eyeing a Lamborghini.

“It’s not super important to me,” he told The Seattle Times. “I just kind of wanted to get the most money out of it.”

Alex created Taco vs. Burrito on a whim during family game nights. Ironically, he didn’t even like tacos or burritos at the time — but was inspired by games like Exploding Kittens. With support from his parents, Leslie Pierson and Mark Butler, he began testing prototypes at local coffee shops and quickly gained traction.

Pierson, a self-described “serial entrepreneur” who appeared on Shark Tank in 2016 for another project, launched a crowdfunding campaign that raised $25,000 — well beyond their initial expectations.

From there, the family founded Hot Taco Inc., with Alex holding majority ownership. After launching on Amazon with around $30,000 in inventory, the game exploded — raking in nearly $1.1 million in its first year.

To date, Taco vs. Burrito has sold over 1.5 million copies and became Amazon’s No. 1 bestselling game. It has since spawned two expansion packs.

Eventually, the family realized they had outgrown their capacity to manage the game’s growing popularity. That’s when they turned to PlayMonster.

“We had many offers over the years,” Pierson said, “but PlayMonster had the right vision.”

Jonathan Berkowitz, CEO of PlayMonster, said he was stunned to learn that the game was created by a child.

“The characters are amazing, the competition is fun for all ages — and it’s rare for a kid to beat their parents in a game the parents still enjoy playing.”

As for Alex, he’s now balancing his newfound wealth with typical teenage dreams. “I just want to invest and maybe buy a Lambo,” he said.
