TRUMP targets grants for hispanic-serving colleges in new policy push

Sunday, August 24, 2025 -President Donald Trump is moving to end millions of dollars in federal grants directed to colleges and universities with high Hispanic student enrollment, a sharp shift that could reshape funding for institutions serving fast-growing Latino populations. The proposal, tied to his broader education agenda, is framed as a way to cut back on what he calls “identity-based” spending in higher education.

The move is already sparking fierce backlash from advocacy groups and university leaders who warn it would disproportionately harm first-generation and low-income students.

Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) have been credited with boosting college access and graduation rates for Latino students, and critics argue stripping away funding would roll back years of progress. Latino lawmakers have also blasted the plan, saying it directly targets one of the nation’s largest minority groups.

If advanced, the policy could fuel legal challenges and intensify political fights over race, equity, and education funding ahead of the next election. Supporters of HSIs are vowing to mobilize in opposition, while Trump allies insist the cuts are part of a broader effort to eliminate federal programs they deem unfair. The coming debate is likely to test how far education policy will become a flashpoint in the national conversation on diversity.
